The system has a combustion engine (4) driving a hydraulic pump (6) connected to pressure accumulators (10). The pressure accumulators deliver hydraulic pressure to a hydraulic traction machinery (14) that drives a set of drive wheels (12) of a hybrid vehicle. An electrical machine (20) is connected to a battery (22), where the electric machine is rotatably connected to a hydraulic machine load (24) that is connected to the pressure accumulators. The batteries are dimensioned to provide energy for urban routes for less than hundred km. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a traction system.
