<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide at a low cost a wavelength plate that has heat resistance and can be increased in size, and a polarization conversion element, an illumination optical system, and an image display device including the wavelength plate. <P>SOLUTION: A wavelength plate comprises a first crystal plate unit 1 formed by arranging main surfaces of a plurality of crystal plates on the same plane, and connecting the crystal plates with one another; and a second crystal plate unit 2 formed by arranging main surfaces of a plurality of crystal plates on the main surface of the first crystal plate unit 1, and connecting the crystal plates at a position different from the connection position of the first crystal plate unit.
