A pulse detonation combustor heat exchanger 100 has one or more pulse detonation combustors 110 creating combustion gases 170, one or more inner pathways 190 positioned about the pulse detonation combustors, and through which a working medium 240 flows so as to exchange heat with the combustion gases in the pulse detonation combustors. The combustor may have a combustion tube 120, and may include an air inlet 140, a fuel inlet 150, and an igniter 160. In use, the air and fuel may be ignited by the igniter to create the flow of combustion gases in the combustion zone 130 of each combustion tube. The one or more inner pathways, for example chambers 195, may extend from a cold inlet 200 to a hot outlet 210, and the pathways extend through an outer chamber 180. The arrangement may also include a pre-heater 230 at the cold inlet.
