<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high luminous efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element has at least a hole transport layer and a luminous layer between a negative electrode and a positive electrode. The hole transport layer contains a hole transport material, the luminous layer is provided contiguously to the hole transport layer and contains a first host material, a second host material and a phosphorescent dopant material. The ionization potential IP(HT) of the hole transport material, the ionization potential IP(h1) of the first host material, and the ionization potential IP(h2) of the second host material satisfy the following relation of (formula 1).
