<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for transmitting an electronic database and enabling a television receiver to access a plurality of items in a way which is attractive or kind toward users, and to indicate these items in an attractive way. <P>SOLUTION: In a method and a device for transmitting and receiving an electronic database, for example, an electronic television program guide, the database includes a plurality of program items. For assisting the user in retrieval of an interested item, a menu structure is similarly transmitted. The menu structure enables access to the database in various methods. The transmitted menu refers to the program items rather than includes the program items (like a teletext system in a known form).
