<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for improving scalability of a deduplication storage system. <P>SOLUTION: A computer-mounted method for improving scalability of a deduplication storage system may include the steps of (1) identifying a database storing a plurality of reference objects, (2) determining that at least one size related feature of the database reaches a predetermined threshold, (3) dividing the database into a plurality of partial databases which can be updated independently of each other, (4) identifying a request that requests the execution of an updating operation to update one or more reference objects stored in at least one partial database, and (5) executing the updating operation on partial databases less than the total number of partial databases so as to avoid processing costs with executing the updating operation on all the partial databases.
