This silicon carbide material is provided with both a base body which comprises silicon carbide as the main component or which comprises silicon carbide and metallic silicon as the main components and a film which covers at least part of the surface of the base body, said film comprising, as the main component, a phase that comprises at least four elements, namely, lithium (Li), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si) and oxygen (O). An example of the silicon carbide material is a material which is provided with both a base body that has a structure where silicon carbide particles are bonded by metallic silicon and a lithium aluminosilicate film that covers part of the surfaces of the silicon carbide particles. The silicon carbide material is utilizable for DPF, an electric-heating type catalytic converter, or the like.
