The invention relates to packaging for fresh vegetables and fruits which has special elements for the preparation of freshly cut salad, and can be used for producing pre-portioned salads that can be cut by the consumer directly before consumption without the need for additional implements and equipment. The container for the storage of foodstuffs, primarily vegetables and fruits, and the preparation of salads therefrom comprises a body and a lid that is capable of sliding along guides on the body. The lid is provided with a slot and has a cutter secured thereto, said cutter having one or more cutting edges and being mounted such that it can swing through the slot towards the inside of the body and back out of the body and such that it can displace the lid along the guides on the body, the cutting edges of the cutter being capable of cutting the foodstuffs inside the body as the cutter swings towards the inside of the body. The packaging is in the form of a container according to the invention, filled with foodstuffs, preferably vegetables and/or fruits.
