A rectangular parallelepiped block of permanent magnet is split to form two or more split permanent magnets in which split surfaces are formed. A method for manufacturing a permanent magnet, in which a permanent magnet to be inserted into a slot formed in a motor rotor is manufactured by assembling two or more split permanent magnets, wherein the split surfaces of the two or more split permanent magnets are arranged on an external peripheral surface of the permanent magnet. Arranging the split surfaces of the split permanent magnets on the external peripheral surface of the permanent magnet makes the cut surfaces of the split permanent magnets into contact surfaces between the split permanent magnets.
