PURPOSE: A composition containing crude drug extract of Cnidii Rhizoma and Polygoni cuspidati Radix is provided to suppress 5-lipoxigenase and airway contraction and inflammation and to prevent and treat respiratory diseases. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating respiratory diseases contains Cnidii Rhizoma and Polygoni cuspidati Radix extract as an active ingredient. The extract is prepared by extracting Cnidii Rhizoma and Polygoni cuspidati Radix with low alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms or 10-95% of alcohol solution. The extract is purified using ethyl acetate, dichloro methane, or butanol. A health functional food for preventing or treating respiratory diseases contains the extract as an active ingredient.
