A coated fabric is produced by coating a backing of textile yarn with a mixture containing a synthetic resin and from 0.5 to 1% by weight of a blowing agent, at a temperature below the activation temperature of said agent, sprinkling a finely-divided material on the coating and heating the coated backing to activate the blowing agent and cure the resin, and thereafter removing the finely divided material. The coating mixture may include a substantial proportion e.g. 10 to 20% by weight, of the finely divided material which may be water-soluble, e.g. sodium chloride, stabilizers and drying agents. The mixture may contain a thermoplastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, and controlled amounts of plasticizer. The coating may comprise two layers, the mixture forming the first or inner layer having a more viscous consistency than that of the second or inner layer. A stretchable coated fabric is produced by coating a Jersey type knitted fabric with a first coating of a synthetic resin mixed with a blowing agent, e.g. an agent which may produce a gas such as nitrogen, on activation, in the form of a thick paste such that the coating adheres to the top surface of the fabric but will not fill the spaces between the loops of the knitted fabric, stretching the fabric widthwise in the direction of the rows of the knitted loops while tensioning the fabric lengthwise, sprinkling fine common salt on the coating to a depth of 15 to 20 times the thickness of the coating, heating to cause fusion and drying while activating the blowing agent, removing the salt, washing the coated fabric with water and drying while in stretched condition, and applying on the first coating a second coating of a similar synthetic resin mixture having a more fluid consistency and repeating the process of the first coating. The outer face of the coating may be sanded, washed, and treated with a water-repellent substance, e.g. a silicone. The backing may be made of natural or synthetic fibres such as cotton or glass, and the synthetic resin may be rubber, acrylic resins, cellulose acetate, nitrate, or acetate butyrate, chlorinated rubber, ethyl cellulose, polyethylene, silicones, and polyvinyl resins, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, chloride, butyrate, or acetate chloride copolymer.
