A method for pumping petroleum fluid from a well bore with a production pump where the petroleum fluid flows into the well bore from an underground formation at an uneven inflow rate comprises selecting a desired rate of fluid output for the production pump; determining the actual rate of fluid output from the production pump; and where the actual rate of fluid output is less than the desired rate of fluid output, pumping make-up petroleum fluid into the well bore at a make-up rate calculated to increase the actual rate of fluid output to the desired rate of fluid output.
