PURPOSE: A backlight device and an image display device are provided to efficiently arrange LEDs on a light guide plate, thereby slimming a backlight and the image display device. CONSTITUTION: Each light source(12) is arranged on each side portion. The side portion is made of long sides and short sides of a light guide plate. The light sources are mounted on thin and long mounting substrates(11). The mounting substrates are consecutively arranged. The mounting substrates are not arranged in a corner portion where the long sides contact the short sides of the light guide plate.
