A buffer mechanism for cushioning the impact of a piston on a cylinder wall comprises a piston and cylinder having complementary tapers, the cylinder having a reduced axial bore at the apex of the tapered surface and being radially resilient in the region of the impacting surfaces. As shown, a piston 13 having an extension 17 of smaller diameter is slidable in a cylinder having, a tapered portion 19 which is complementary to a tapered portion 16 on the piston. The portion 19 has a number of radial slots 22 and may be bound on the outside with a composite band of glass fibres and plastic material. The angleαof the taper on the cylinder may be up to 3 degrees greater than the angle # of the taper on the piston. The tool may be operated by an explosive cartridge, as shown, or by compressed air. |
