<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system in which aberration variation during varying power is appropriately suppressed, an optical device having the variable power optical system, and a manufacturing method of the variable power optical system. <P>SOLUTION: The variable power optical system ZL to be installed in an optical device such as a single lens reflex camera 1 includes, sequentially from an object side, a first lens group G1 having a positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having a negative refractive power, a third lens group G3 having a positive refractive power, a fourth lens group G4 having a negative refractive power, a fifth lens group G5 having a positive refractive power, and a sixth lens group G6 having a negative refractive power.
