PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To start detection of an edge position of a recording material regardless of a sensor stopping position, and accurately detect the recording material edge position without a dedicated driving source or member for reciprocating the sensor.

SOLUTION: A rotation angle of a crank arm is calculated on the basis of a period in which a recording material is detected or a period in which the recording material is not detected. The calculated rotation angle of the crank arm is used to calculate an edge position of the recording material. This enables start of detection of the recording material edge position regardless of a sensor stopping position and accurate detection of the recording material edge position without a dedicated driving source or member for reciprocating the sensor.
