Boron nitride containing less than 1% carbon is prepared by reacting gaseous ammonia at 500-950 DEG C. with either an already produced boron nitride containing 13.3-2% carbon, or a mixture of boric acid, or anhydride, with a solid, or liquid, organic amine. The boron nitride may be prepared by heating a mixture of boric acid and melamine, or ethylene diamine in a stream of N2 at 950 DEG C. This boron nitride, or a mixture of boric acid, or anhydride, and melamine, hexamethylene tetramine, diphenylamine, or ethylene diamine is heated in a non-carbonaceous, e.g. silica or quartz, crucible in an atmosphere, or stream, of gaseous ammonia. Specification 874,165 is referred to. |
