[Also in Group IX] Before forming into cigarette filters a ribbon tow 11, Fig. 1, of crimped continuous filaments, drawn from a package or bale 12, twists 35 and edge folds 36 are removed by passing the tow under low tension through a chamber 13 in which it is acted on by air from pipes 28, 29 and supplied as jets from orifices 30, Fig. 3, the tow being maintained substantially free of any friction between the package 12 and orifices 30. The tow passes from the chamber 13 tangentially over a stainless-steel roller or cylinder 14. Specification 765,963 is referred to.
