Artificial threads, bands, films and like products are made by spinning viscose containing 1%-6% by weight (based on the cellulose in the viscose) of at least one cation-active compound with the formula: <FORM:0879995/IV (a)/1> in which R1 is an alkyl, aryl or alicyclic radical, preferably containing at least 6 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl radical with 1-3 carbon atoms, n is a whole number of 2-5, x and y are each whole numbers, the sum of x+y preferably being 2-50, and Z is an anion having substantially no surface activity, the viscose having an ammonium chloride number of at least 13, into a spinning bath containing a maximum of 7% by weight of sulphuric acid, at least 2% by weight of zinc sulphate and at least 0,04% by weight of at least one compound with the formula: <FORM:0879995/IV (a)/2> in which R3 is an aliphatic chain with at least 8 carbon atoms, n is 2, 3 or 4 and x and y are whole numbers, the sum of x+y being at least 5, and then drawing the products. The cation-active compound is preferably injected into the viscose and thoroughly mixed therewith immediately prior to spinning. The spinning bath, which preferably has a temperature of 47 DEG -57 DEG C., may also contain 10%-25% by weight of sodium sulphate. The spun products may be stretched in the spinning bath or in a second bath of elevated temperature containing dilute sulphuric acid, to which salts, e.g. sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and/or zinc sulphate, may be added.
