Hand portable apparatus 300 allows a user to measure the respiration rate of a subject. The apparatus comprises a manual input which the user activates for each observed breath the subject undertakes. Respiration rate is calculated from the plurality of discrete manual input activations made within a measurement period. The apparatus further comprises a processor for counting the discrete input activations and the apparatus also has display for presenting result 307. The display may comprise a touch screen with a defined activation area 304 to receive the discrete input activations of the user. In use the apparatus may be set to accept a predetermined number of discrete inputs. The processor may determine temporal variability of the discrete input activations during the measurement period to indicate reliability of measurement. Unreliable measurement may be determined where measurements of the time between respective measurements differ by more than a threshold amount. |
