<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary damper configured to obtain a proportional relationship between the change in rotational speed and the amount of damper torque. <P>SOLUTION: The rotary damper includes: a housing; a shaft relatively rotatable to the housing; a first torque generator having first torque generating surfaces provided on either of the housing and the shaft; a second torque generator having second torque generating surfaces provided on the other part and capable of facing the first torque generating surfaces; and a centrifugal force sensor. When either of the housing and the shaft rotates, the centrifugal force sensor moves from the vicinity of the shaft toward the inner wall of the housing due to the centrifugal force, and either of the first torque generator and the second torque generator, which has a guide surface for the centrifugal force sensor, moves toward the other torque generator, which changes the facing areas between the first torque generating surfaces and the second torque generating surfaces.
