PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a powder for lithium ion secondary battery negative electrode which is used in a lithium ion secondary battery having a large discharge capacity and good cycle characteristics.

SOLUTION: The powder for lithium ion secondary battery negative electrode consists of SiO particles and Si fixed to the surface thereof. The Si is fixed partially to the surface of the SiO particles. Occupancy of Si on the surface of the SiO particle is preferably 0.03-0.50. Composition of the SiO particle and the Si fixed to the surface thereof, represented by O/Si mol ratio, is preferably 0.5≤O/Si<1. Furthermore, a carbon coating is preferably provided on the surface.
