983,098. Balancing shafts. C. B. ROGERS. Jan. 26, 1962 [Sept. 19, 1961], No. 3082/62. Heading F2U. A balancer for a rotating shaft 6 comprises a casing 8 mounted on the shaft and having a rim 13 concentric with the shaft axis, a ball 31 is in rolling contact with the rim and means are provided for blocking rolling movement of the ball on certain portions of the rim. The blocking means may comprise a number of fingers 24 moving in radial slots 21 under the control of a ring 27 loaded by a spring or rubber 0-ring 29. A number of balls may be used and the fingers controlled by the rubber ring 29 only. In an embodiment for attachment to the end of an engine crank-shaft the fingers may be L-shaped and constrained inwards by the rubber ring, the metal ring 27 being radially outwards of the rubber ring to move the fingers, as a whole, eccentrically. |
