A radar system has a radar sensor (10), an evaluation device (12) and a collision detection device (18) for detecting an imminent collision and supplies the probable collision time-point (Tc) and the collision speed (Vc) to the pre-crash-system (20). The radar sensor (10) can be switched into a speed measurement mode (CW) through the collision detection device (18), in which a precise measurement of the relative speed (V) results.
