A fetal pulse rate monitor 52 is attached to the scalp of the foetus 38 in the uterus 34 (e.g. during delivery). The monitor includes an ultrasound crystal 58, an ultrasound controller 66 which operates the ultrasound crystal 58 to produce ultrasound signals and receive reflected ultrasound signals, and a wireless transmitter 84. A biocompatible housing 54 at least partially surrounds the ultrasound crystal 58, ultrasound controller 66, and the wireless transmitter 84. The received signals are transmitted wirelessly to a remote patient monitoring device 98 (e.g. a tablet PC) external to the womb. The monitoring device 98 includes a wireless receiver 92 and a processor 94 that detects instantaneous fetal heart rate from the received ultrasound signal. A graphical display 96 presents the determined fetal heart rate (FHR). The monitor is attached to the scalp using an adhesive. The monitor uses an acoustic lens to spread the emitted ultrasound beam so that accurate positioning of the monitor on the scalp is not necessary. |
