The mechanism for rapping collecting electrodes in an electrostatic precipitator is arranged to produce a number of raps of successively increasing intensity. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, two hammers 1, 2 are pivoted at 4 on a crank 5 mounted on a driving shaft 6 and arranged so that the light hammer 1 first raps the bar 9 and is later struck by the heavy hammer 2; each of the arms 3, 3<1> which carry the hammers may be formed of jointed parts to provide for their extension or angular adjustment. The weights may be spherical, cylindrical or, as shown in Fig. 5, of box-shape and arranged so that the heavier weight 11 can fit within the other weight 10; these weights are carried by arms 13, 13<1> on a crank 15 and, if required, weights 10<1> can be added to the weight 10. While two weights are shown in the above embodiments, the number preferred is three. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, a rapper bar 17 is arranged to be drawn back against a spring 20 by fingers 23, 24 of a cam which consecutively act on a cross member 25 on the bar, the shorter finger 23 producing a weaker rap while the following finger 24 compresses the spring a greater distance to produce a rap of greater intensity. |
