A video signal processing device is provided with a local dimming unit (1) which calculates the luminance control value of each blocks of backlight of a video display device according to an inputted original video signal and controls the luminance of each of the blocks by the luminance control value, and a video signal correction unit (2) which receives the luminance control value of each of the blocks from the local dimming unit, generates a brightness correction signal on the basis of the luminance control value and the original video signal, and corrects the brightness of the original video signal. The local dimming unit (1) calculates the luminance control value of each of the blocks by weighted adding the brightness average value and the brightness maximum value of pixels in each image region of the original video signal corresponding to each of the blocks in a mixing ratio determined according to the difference between the brightness maximum value and the brightness average value. Here, the larger the difference between the brightness maximum value and the brightness average value becomes, the larger the weight of the brightness maximum value is made.
