VIRTUAL VIEWPOINT IMAGE GENERATION METHOD, VIRTUAL VIEWPOINT IMAGE GENERATION DEVICE, AND VIRTUAL VIEWPOINT IMAGE GENERATION PROGRAM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel technique for generating a virtual viewpoint image of high subjective quality with a small operation amount when generating a virtual viewpoint image obtained when a subject is viewed from a viewpoint different from a camera by using an image of the subject photographed by the camera.

SOLUTION: When a method of generating a virtual viewpoint image with a small operation amount by using a multi-viewpoint image and simple geometric information on each of pixels of the multi-viewpoint image associated with a distance from the camera to the subject is employed, a boundary region in which pieces of light beam information on a plurality of subjects differing in distance from the camera are mixed is determined, and light beam information sampled only in the region is corrected into a light beam of the subject corresponding to distance information to generate the multi-viewpoint image. Consequently, an influence of light beams with which the pieces of light beam information from the plurality of subjects are mixed is reduced to realize the generation of the virtual viewpoint image of high quality with the small operation amount.
