A mobile device (10) includes a protected mode in which the device (10) automatically locks itself after a period of inactivity. In the protected mode, the device (10) can determine whether it is in a trusted location (108, 158, 208, 306). If the device (10) is not in a trusted location, the device (10) continues in the protected mode (110, 160, 210, 308). If the device (10) is within a trusted location, the device (10) can alter the protected mode (112, 162, 212, 310), such as by disabling the protected mode. Alternatively, a parameter associated with the protected mode can be changed. For instance, the period of inactivity before the device (10) automatically self locks can be increased. The trusted location can be defined by a specific network, specific wireless access point, specific geographic coordinates or an express user indication. Such a device (10) can avoid the frustration of repeatedly locking and unlocking the device (10) if the user is located in an environment in which privacy and security concerns are minimized. |
