In an electric arc-furnace for smelting steel, the furnace side wall above the working openings 3, 5 is frustoconical or of convexly-curved section so that it overhangs the furnace interior, and is constructed of refractory bricks 10 supported by a metal frame 11. The arched cover 7, provided with electrode ducts 8, may rest on the frame 11, or brickwork 10, or may be formed integrally therewith. The metal frame 11 is supported on the lower part 1 of the furnace side wall and/or by the outer armouring of the furnace. The bricks 10 are preferably such as to afford intense reflection of radiant heat, examples being given.</p> |
