The cell has a compartment (10) comprising an ion exchange membrane that separates oxidizing fluid and reducing fluid. Oxidizing and reducing fluid circulation systems (50, 52) circulate the oxidizing fluid and the reducing fluid along sides of the membrane based on different flow directions, respectively. The oxidizing and reducing fluid circulation systems have reversal systems (68, 78) that reverse the fluid flow directions in a cathodic fluid exchange pipe and an anodic fluid exchange pipe (16), respectively. An independent claim is also included for a method for supplying oxidizing fluid and reducing fluid to a fuel cell.
