<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute highly reliable edge detection. <P>SOLUTION: Difference sum value computing means 5 computes a difference sum value for which absolute values of differences of combination pixels in combination pixel storage means are summed up for respective edge directions for a specified rectangular region for each edge direction. Center vicinity pixel difference value computing means 11 computes a difference between a center vicinity pixel value and a representative pixel value as a center vicinity pixel difference value for the respective edge directions. Edge detection reliability computing means 13 computes edge detection reliability on the basis of the center vicinity pixel difference value and the difference sum value for the respective edge directions.
