PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and an operating method thereof are provided to maintain data read precision without suppressing a voltage increase of a common source line by preparing dummy read time. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of memory strings are arranged in a memory cell array(10) in parallel. The plurality of memory strings are connected to bit lines through string selection transistors. The plurality of memory strings are connected to the common source line through ground selection transistors. A control circuit(11) corrects a voltage applied to a memory cell for a read operation according to a voltage level of the common source line by a current flowing from the memory strings to the common source line in a data read operation.
