Double sideband microwave modulated light is, by a half-silvered mirror 1, and further mirrors 2, 3 at 45 degrees in the path of one beam, converted into two-beams at right angles both impinging at 45 degrees on a half-silvered, mirror 4, and this results in the continued beams ML 1 , ML 2 , each having single side-band modulation, provided the path lengths differ by an odd multiple of quarter wavelengths of the light and of the modulation frequency. The S.S.B. beams may then easily be modulated, to recover the original modulation, or may be used for transmitting. A load 5 may absorb one or other of the beams.
