In a ball-and-socket pipe coupling a ring 21 slidably encircles the ball section 11 about the crown of that section and has an end adapted to abut the end of the socket section 1, the ring providing substantially the entire bearing surface for the ball section. The means for drawing the ring and socket sections into abutment include a plurality of wedge hooks 31 disposed in spaced relationship about the periphery of one of the opposing socket and ring sections in overhanging relationship to the other section and a corresponding number of wedges 35 similarly distributed about the periphery of the said other section and adapted to wedge in the wedge hooks. As shown, the socket carries racks 41 engageable by a pinion 49 rotatable on a pin 47 and attached to a handle 53; the latter is fitted into a hole 45 to provide relative rotation between the ring and socket sections initially to bring the wedge hooks and wedges into registry. A sealing ring 69 is forced into sealing engagement with the ball section by pressure of the fluid flowing through the joint. A pin 59 is inserted between the teeth of the rack 41 to prevent accidental uncoupling.
