<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper size detecting mechanism that can effectively prevent erroneous detection of paper size through suppression of creep deformation of a detecting member, and to provide an image forming apparatus provided with such a paper size detecting mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: In a detecting member 35, three detecting plates 51a, 51b, and 51c, each substantially rectangular plate-shaped, which are arranged to face an arc-shaped portion 33a of a following member 33 are integrally formed. The detecting plates 51a to 51c are cantilever-supported on a body portion 50, and are composed of a base-end portion R1 on which a prop 60 abuts from its back side, and a swing portion R2 which is located on the tip side of the base-end portion R1 and with which protrusions 43a and 43b on the arc-shaped portion 33a contact.
