Disclosed are a detection method and device for frame types. The method includes: detecting the play time of each frame; if the play time of the current frame is less than the maximum play time of the received frame, then determining the current frame as a bi-directional predictive frame (B frame). In the technical solution of the embodiments of the present invention, the frame type is judged without decoding the payload in combination with coding orders of frames of different types and the size relationship between the former and later data of frames of different types, thereby eliminating the effect of the attenuation factor, and improving the accuracy of the frame type detection.
