<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device in a projector device that can suppress a lamp's average power to a desired value using a processor with a slow processing speed. <P>SOLUTION: A color wheel 7 rotates and disperses the light from a lamp 10 into each color component. The supply power to the lamp 10 is controlled to different levels according to the segment of the color wheel 7. A power supply device control unit 30 samples the electric power supplied from a power supply device 20 to the lamp 10 at a sampling period Ts to obtain an average power, and performs feedback control so that the average power can be a reference power according to the lighting mode. The sampling period is set so as to be Ts>Tc/c and Ts≠n×Tc (n is an integer.) where the total number of segments in the color wheel is c and the rotation period in the color wheel 7 is Tc.
