The invention relates to a compression device comprising a drive unit; a compressor which is driven by the drive unit and compresses a gaseous compression medium; a cooling unit comprising at least one fan wheel which cools the compression medium; the fan wheel is in a driving connection with the drive unit or an additionally provided second drive unit in order to be rotationally driven thereby. The invention is characterised in that a hydrodynamic coupling, by which the fan wheel is hydrodynamically driven, is disposed in the driving connection, and the drive power transmission by the hydrodynamic coupling can be varied during operation by pressurizing the hydrodynamic coupling with a control pressure medium, wherein the compression medium is also the control pressure medium.
