<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a newsprint paper that is high in surface strength and excellent in printing workability, while having a high filler content and being high in opacity. <P>SOLUTION: The newsprint paper includes a base paper for newsprint paper and both sides of the base paper for newsprint paper are coated with a surface treatment agent. The surface treatment agent contains an oxidized starch and a hydroxyethylated starch, the content ratio of the oxidized starch to hydroxyethylated starch is 1:9 or more and 9:1 or less in terms of mass, and the ash content is 5% or more and 20% or less.
