PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device that prevents erroneous detection of the document size, and an image forming apparatus.

SOLUTION: An image reading device includes: a control part 10 that obtains image data using an image sensor 229 in synchronization with emission of light-emitting diode 222, when a reference angle detection part 101 detects that an angle between a cover and a document platen is the reference angle; and a size detection part 100 that detects the size of a document using the image data obtained by the image sensor 229 with the light-emitting diode 222 being turned on.
