995,860. Forcing liquids by gaseous pressure. TARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Feb. 21, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 6765/62. Heading F1R. [Also in Division H1] A reservoir 3 for a deferred action battery has a normally sealed electrolyte outlet passage 55, a normally sealed inlet passage 41 connected to a gas generator e.g. a powdered fuel ignited electrically, a coiled partly perforated tube 23 within the reservoir containing a substantial proportion of the electrolyte and being connected to one of the passages so that on activation of the gas generator the seals are broken by the rise in fluid pressure and the gas must flow through the tube 23 and eject electrolyte before reaching the outlet passage 55. With the tube 23 connected to the inlet passage 41 gas from the generator ejects electrolyte through the perforations into the reservoir. The force of the ejected electrolyte ruptures a diaphragm 19 in the outlet passage 55 and substantially all the electrolyte originally in the tube flows into the cells of the battery. When the tube is empty the gas escapes through the perforations to the top of the reservoir and ejects about half of the remaining electrolyte into the cells. With the tube 23 connected to the outlet 55 gas is introduced to the top of the reservoir and expels first the electrolyte contained in the tube and then part of the electrolyte remaining in the reservoir. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 913,394. |
