[Also in Division B8] The invention relates to structures such as rocket motors that are wound with filaments to reinforce them and in which such structures have at least one oblate end 14, Fig. 1, formed with off-axis ports 16. The structures are reinforced by girth windings 12 and end-over-end axial windings 34, Fig. 3. According to the invention the endover-end axial windings 34 are reinforced by reinforcement rings 36 of filamentary material extending around each off-axis port 16 and by what are called " zonals 40 " of filamentary material, the filaments of which follow the latitudinally - extending principal lines of circumferential stress on the oblate end and connect the left half of one ring 36 with the right half of another ring 36. The zonals 40 are initially wound on specifically designed mandrels and to facilitate stripping of a completed zonal from its mandrel a layer of polyethylene is first applied to the mandrel, followered by a layer of cloth and then the filamentary windings embedded in an epoxy resin binder. The resin binder is dried and partially cured before removal from the zonal mandrel by cutting across the filaments. The cloth helps the resin maintain the filaments in fixed relative position after removal from the zonal mandrel. The oblate end 14 may be reinforced by a number of filamentary layers according to the following sequence:-axial windings 34, rings 36, zonals 40, rings 36, axial windings 34, rings 36, zonals 40, rings 36 and so on. The zonals 40 may be applied in sets of four, each zonal commencing 90 degrees ahead of the other and extending over half of the circumference of the end to be covered. This results in two layers of zonals each layer covering the end circumference once. The zonals may overlap.
