The invention provides a process for dyeing homo and copolymers of alpha olefins with 1: 1 metal complex dyes containing at least one o1o1-dihydroxy-, o-carboxy, o1-hydroxy- or o-amino, o1-hydroxy-azo group and having at most one sulphonic acid group, in which the olefin fibres are spun from a melt which contains a chelating agent having a chelate formation constant of at least 1 x 104 as well as the olefin polymer, and then dyeing the fibres with the metal complex dye in the presence of an alkaline earth metal salt soluble in water. The olefin polymers dyed include poly-ethylene, propylene, 1-butane, 1-heptane, isobutylene, 4, 4dimethyl-1-pentane, 4-methyl-pentane, 3-methyl-1-pentane, and copolymers thereof. Aromatic defines may be used e.g. styrene. Chelating agents include 8-hydroxyquinoline, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, picolinic acid quinolinic acid and its esters, ethylenedinitrilotetraautonitrile, diguanidine, propyl gallate, phthaonitrile esters of ethylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid, iminotriacetic acid, a -a 1 dipyridyl and poly a -pyridil. These chelating agents chelate with the metal in the 1:1 metal complex dye. The alkaline earth metal salts used are those of calcium, strontium and barium, these compounds being used in almost equal quantity with the dye. The olefin polymer is blended with 0.1-20% by weight of chelating agent.
