The method involves correlating a state variable to be determined with a current charge state of a vehicle battery (20). A current pulse with defined time length is produced and fed into the battery. A resulting voltage characteristic is detected and evaluated for determination of internal resistance of the battery as a state variable. Determined value of the internal resistance of the battery is utilized for updating an open-circuit voltage of the battery. Starting capability estimation is performed during a commissioning phase and/or an operating phase of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining a state variable of a vehicle battery.
