The present invention relates to a method for the production of a piston (10, 110) for an internal combustion engine, having a circumferential cooling channel (24), whereby a blank (11′, 111′) of a lower piston part (11, 111) is forged, and a blank (12′) of an upper piston part (12) is produced, the blanks (11′, 111′, 12′) are pre-machined and joined together to form a piston blank (10′, 110′), which is finished to produce a piston (10, 110). According to the invention, it is provided that at least one depression (25) or at least one recess (135), respectively, is formed into the blank (11′, 111′) of the lower piston part (11, 111) during the forging process, whereby in the finished piston (10, 110), the at least one depression (25) forms an opening (33) for a coolant inflow and/or a coolant outflow, or the at least one recess (135) forms an excavation groove (136) for a pin securing ring, respectively.
