Organic compounds are hydrogenated by reacting with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing the product of a reaction between a Co, Mo, or Mn compound with an Al containing reducing agent. Hydrogenation of benzene, toluene, cumene, indene, indane, naphthalene, (to tetralin or decalin), tetralin, phenanthrene, ethylene, pentene, 2:4:4-trimethyl 2-pentene, a -methyl styrene and butadiene is referred to, typical reaction conditions being 800 p.s.i.g. and 100 DEG C. Specification 823,454 is referred to.ALSO:Organic compounds are reduced by reacting with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing the product of a reaction between a Co, Mo, or Mn compound with an aluminium containing reducing agent. The organic compound may be an aromatic compound and/or an olefinically unsaturated compound. Reference is made to the hydrogenation of sulfolene in the presence of acetone as a solvent. In the hydrogenation of acetonitrile 2 moles of hydrogen per mole are taken up, 90% of the product being ethylamine and 10% diethylamine. Diethyl maleate, mesityl oxide, ethyl benzoate and anisole are also specified as hydrogenatable organic compounds. Specification 823,454 is referred to.ALSO:A hydrogenation catalyst is prepared by contacting a Co, Mo or Mn compound with an aluminium-containing reducing agent, which may be of formula R3-nAlXn in which R is a hydrocarbon group of 1-10 C atoms, X is hydrogen or a halogen and n=0 to 3, n being 3 only when X is hydrogen. Specified compounds of Co, Mo or Mn are octacarbonyl dicobaltate, cobalt hydroxide, cobalt oxide, cobaltous acetate, cobalt octanoate, manganous acetate and molybdenum hexacarbonyl.
