The present invention relates to a cooling unit and a method for cooling air in a cooling appliance. The cooling unit (1) comprising a cooling tube (3) which in use is provided with a refrigerant fluid, the cooling tube being arranged in a cooling container (5) adapted to carry a secondary liquid to be cooled by the refrigerant fluid in the cooling tube. The secondary liquid surrounds the cooling tube such that in use when the refrigerant fluid has a temperature below the freezing point of the secondary liquid, frozen liquid builds up in the cooling container around the cooling tube, wherein an air cooling loop (7) comprising the cooling container and means (9, 10) for circulating the secondary liquid to and from the cooling container and wherein the air cooling loop comprises at least one surface (10a, 11) for heat exchanging between the circulating secondary liquid and air at the surface of the air cooling loop.
