摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a single or multi-color light emitting diode (LED) with high extraction efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: A single or multi-color light emitting diode (LED) with high extraction efficiency comprises a substrate 78, a buffer layer 76 formed on the substrate, one or more patterned layers 72 deposited on the top of the buffer layer, and one or more active layers 70 formed on or between the patterned layers. The LED is prepared for example by lateral epitaxial overgrowth (LEO), and includes one or more light emitting species 80 such as quantum wells.
