A tire support device (10) for supporting the bead area of a tire is disclosed. The device (10) comprises an inner support member (40) having a plurality of support vanes (50, 60) mounted to the support member (40), the support vanes (50, 60) extending radially from the inner support member (40); and a plurality of cover plates (14) forming an outer cylindrical surface for supporting the bead area of a tire. The cover plates (14) each comprise an inner rib (30) which extends radially inward, the rib (30) having one or more guide members (58). Each guide member (58) is slidably mounted on at least one of the support vanes (50, 60). The guide members (58) are slidable from a radially inward position to close the cover plates (14), and to a radially outward position.
